Iowa High School Tennis Players of the Week
2A Girls: Claire Gu, Valley (So.)
Gu a sophomore at Valley is in her first season with the Tigers due to the cancelled 2020 season. Claire defeated freshman Abbie Peterson of Ankeny Centennial in a highly anticipated match of newcomers to the high school scene this year securing a 6-2, 3-6, 11-9 win last week.
2A Boys: Kevin Strand, Marshalltown (Jr.)
Strand helped lead the Bobcats to a 3-0 week as a team defeating Southeast Polk, Newton and Mason City. Strand had a perfect 6-0 week at the top singles and doubles spots including two straight set wins and a superbreaker win against Mason City in singles, and three straight sets wins at number one doubles with partner Jason Strand.
1A Girls: Chassidy Henwood, Newton (Sr.)
Henwood, a senior, provided a spark for Newton last week who went 1-1 in team meets with a win coming against Marshalltown. Henwood went 3-1 playing at number two singles and number two doubles, winning both of her singles matches to start off the season.
Teams of the Week
2A Girls: Iowa City West
The Women of Troy opened up their season against #3 Cedar Falls. In what could be a state title rematch later this spring, West hung on to win the meet 5-4 after a 4-2 lead following singles. To round out the week, West shutout Waterloo West to begin the year 2-0.
2A Boys: Valley
Valley remains perfect on the year at 4-0 and thanks to a big week with wins over two ranked opponents. The Tigers first took out 4th ranked Ankeny Centennial in a tight 5-4 match and then followed that up with a 7-2 win over #6 Dowling.
1A Girls: Pella Christian
Pella Christian has kicked the 2021 campaign off with two decisive wins last week moving their overall record to 2-0. A pair of 8-1 wins were captured against Albia and Centerville
1A Boys: Iowa Falls-Alden
The Cadets have started the season 2-0 thanks to a pair of wins last week. A convincing 8-1 win against South Tama early last week was followed up by a gutsy 5-4 win over Clear Lake to remain perfect on the year.
