2019 Recruiting Class
Nearing the halfway point of the 2019 season, high school tennis is in full force in the state of Iowa. Another class of seniors are competing in the last high school season before they graduate through the ranks and go off to their future endeavors. What is my main goal with this blog? It is to promote players, coaches, teams and the sport of tennis that is in Iowa High School Today we will take a look at the top Boys and Girls recruits in the Senior Class of 2019.
You can see the full list of college tennis commitments here:

Boys:
1. Rami Scheetz - Cedar Rapids Washington
Scheetz is currently the #1 player on CR Washington and leads the charge for the 3rd ranked Warriors. The University of Connecticut commit was the 2A Doubles Champion in 2018 and is a favorite to not just repeat in doubles, but to capture a singles title this spring as well.
2. Tim Ellis - Ames
The defending state Singles Champion is having another spectacular season during his senior campaign. It was said to be in an article by the Ames Tribune that Ellis would like to focus on doubles for postseason play this season. Ellis will be attending Iowa State University this fall.
3. Sam Shin - Iowa City West
The 3rd place singles state finisher in 2018 is back atop the lineup in Iowa City leading what looks to be an unstoppable Trojans squad. It will be interesting to see if Shin will go singles or doubles this postseason. Shin will be attending the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana this fall.
4. Justin Sehlin - Pleasant Valley
Part of a marathon singles semi-final last year, Sehlin is looking to improve upon his 4th place state finish. Sehlin is leading a strong Spartans group that will want the chance to challenge IC West. Justin has committed to play tennis at Gustavus Adolphus College in Saint Peter, Minnesota.
5. Ty Sherman - Cedar Rapids Washington
The other half of the 2018 state doubles champions, Ty Sherman at #2 singles for the Warriors arguably form the best 1-2 combo with Scheetz in the state. Ty will be attending the University of Iowa this coming fall.
6. Jack Wenzel - Iowa City West
The younger Wenzel followed the footsteps of his older brother Karl by
winning a doubles title of his own in 2017. It is said to be that Jack is looking at Luther College and Wheaton College (IL) to continue his tennis career. Iowa State University is also in the mix.
7. Yash Singh - Bettendorf
Singh and the Bulldogs have quietly put together a strong season so far this year. Both Singh and the Bulldogs are undefeated and they still have some great meets left to play including some crossover to the west side. I have not received any word on the plans or interests of Singh for this fall.
8. Sasha Chackalackal - Iowa City West
Instead of trying to spell out his last name a bunch of times, I will refer to the Trojan senior by his first name. Sasha had a quiet first couple of years with the Trojans but has burst onto the scenes last year and continues that strong play this year. Sasha will be attending Washington University in St. Louis this fall.
Girls
1. Cari Naanep - Johnston
Naanep the defending 2A girls singles state champion will once again be a favorite for this years singles title. One of the two highly touted recruits in this class, Naanep has led the Dragons group again this year where they are currently ranked 5th in the state. Cari will be attending the University of Iowa this fall.
2. Anatta Charoenkul - Fairfield
The other half of the highly touted recruits in the 2019 class, Charoenkul is the defending 1A state singles champion. She will again have another tough test with teammate Yana Gaskell not only for the regional title, but for the state title again. Char
oenkul has committed to play at Purdue Northwest University next fall.
3. Brooke Jorgensen - Pella
Jorgensen was part of the team state runner-up Lady Dutch squad from a year ago and has currently held down the top spot over in Pella. Brooke has had a great season so far and the Lady Dutch are just outside a top ten ranking. Jorgensen has committed to play at Winona State University this fall.
4. Lauren Couves - Ames
Couves was on the not so fun side of a thrilling team state championship in 2018 against the Women of Troy in Iowa City. Now? Couves and the Little Cyclones are ranked #1 and are poised to get back to the finals, where maybe a rematch with IC West awaits. Lauren has committed to play at the University of Wisconsin - Stout.
5. Taylor Hogan - Columbus Catholic
The top player for 1A #1 ranked Columbus once again is a critical piece for this team who wants to defend their team state title. Columbus and Hogan passed maybe their toughest test and favorite to be their state finals opponent in CR Xavier 5-4 this week. Hogan will actually be playing softball at University of Northern Iowa next year.
6. Emma Lassen - Cedar Rapids Jefferson
Cedar Rapids Jefferson may not be a powerhouse in the state, but they form a solid team and Lassen is a big reason that is. Lassen has put together a nice season of her on in 2019 in the likes of a tough Mississippi Valley Conference. Rumors say that Emma is interested in Coe College, Wartburg College and Augustana College. She has yet to decide
7. Olivia Phillips - Waverly Shell-Rock
Currently sitting at #7 in the state, the Go-Hawks led by Phillips, have only suffered one defeat in their 2019 campaign at the hands of #1 Columbus. Phillips will be a key piece to this Waverly Shell-Rock team that is looking to reach the final four. Phillips has committed to Wartburg College this fall.
