It has been a couple of years since I wrote this article on how the postseason process works for Iowa High School Boys and Girls tennis. I took a little bit of time to clean it up and make it hopefully even easier to read and follow as we progress through the 2022 edition of Iowa HS Tennis. *Team postseason play defaults to state scoring. State scoring = 6 singles matches and 3 doubles matches for a total of 9 matches. Team postseason meets are played to decision, when a team wins 5 matches to clinch the meet* Boys Postseason Process 1. Districts 2. Preliminary Substate 3. Substate 4. Individual State 5. Team State Districts Each season, the largest 48 schools in the state are declared the 2A division in tennis, with the rest of the schools making up the 1A division. Teams are sorted in districts to begin postseason play. Typically, these districts are dictated by geography. Since 2018, Iowa High School Tennis has produced 110+ players (and many more over the years) who have went on to continue their tennis careers in the college ranks and have represented all the division levels of DI, DII, DIII, NAIA and Junior College. There are so many paths that high school students can take after completing high school, whether it be entering the workforce, pursue college etc. College tennis is one of the many options that is available to junior players, being offered at all division levels across the country. The state of Iowa has seen many go on to play in college, and even so these last couple of years, there have been a ton of great players who decided to hang up their racquets coming out of high school. Another great high school tennis season is in the books for the State of Iowa. New State Champions were crowned, and we made it through the season with little to no covid issues! As we come to a close, here at the blog I wanted to get awards out this year including 1st/2nd team all-state selections, freshman of the year, senior of the year and coach of the year. All of the 1A/2A Boys/Girls will be listed below and you can also see the tweets with the pictures of selections posted. This is by no means state official, but here is the 2nd edition of the Iowa HS Tennis Blog Awards!
It has been such a great week of tennis all over the state over the past week and we get one more day of it tomorrow as the girls team state tournament will get wrapped up. Eight teams remain who will all be going for gold not too long from now. The good thing is, the weather is supposed to be very nice and even fairly hot which is a great change from a week ago. Keeping that in mind, there have not been many really hot days over this season so everyone make sure to stay hydrated even if you are just watching! Let's take a look at the teams who are still standing.
It is finally state tournament time on the girls side! The boys season is officially over and this is the last week of high school tennis for the girls with the individual state tournament taking place Wednesday and Thursday while the team tournament finishes up on Saturday. Lots of great opportunities lie ahead for all qualifiers in the coming days to cement their name in Iowa HS Tennis history. Excited to continue to follow along as the season approaches its close for the 2021 chapter.
We just had a tremendous weekend of Boys State Tennis on the singles and doubles side a few days ago and now the tide turns to team play after the Memorial Day holiday. First of all, I am hoping for nice weather and outdoor play as that tremendously prevents the day from being incredibly long, but also it's great to be outside to enjoy some tennis right? Only 4 teams remain in both the 2A and 1A brackets vying for a state championship. I will be doing team bracket live results showing who advances and who moves to the 3rd place matches, but I will also be doing my best to provide updates on team scores for all the meets throughout the day!
It is finally state tournament time, what we have been waiting for since the end of the 2019 season! I think I can speak on behalf of everyone involved in high school tennis this year that we are all just so happy and grateful that a season was able to take place and be held this spring. For the most part, things have been pretty normal besides the extra Covid precautions at meets. We have had our usual annoying and bad weather filled with rain and wind, so the normal. The forecast for Friday/Saturday is about a typical as it gets for the state tournament. One of the days seems to have to be played inside, or so it seems the last decade. Regardless, this is the best time of the year for Iowa high school tennis!
The regular season has just wrapped up and postseason play is in full swing. Boys tennis had districts and preliminary substate last week and over the weekend but now it's the girls turn to get going. Girls team regional play has gotten started over the last weekend and few days and will get back to it on Saturday May 22. Right now, we turn to individual regional play that is set to take place tomorrow at eight host sites across the state. Individual regionals strictly qualify singles players and doubles teams to the state tournament and have no implications on team play such as the boys side. There seems to be a lot of rain in the forecast this week, so I am hoping with you all that play can get through fairly smoothly and we have some great tennis all over!

Players of the Week 1A Girls: Mira Keeran (Cedar Falls) Keeran is currently undefeated in singles and doubles and has not dropped a set yet this season. Keeran most recently posted wins against Freshman phenom Abbie Peterson of Ankeny Centennial and former doubles state champion Allison Szalay of Dowling in the Valley invite this past week. In addition to a first place finish at number one singles at the Valley invite, Keeran helped Cedar Falls claim the team title as well.
