2018 Girls Team Regionals

Here comes the busy part of the season, but arguably the most exciting time of the season. Yesterday on the Boys side, districts was completed and players have qualified for the individual state singles and doubles tournament as well as winning teams advancing to the substate rounds. Now? The Girls side is set to get rolling this weekend with the team regionals.

2A Girls

Region 1:

Teams: SC North, SC West, SC East, CBTJ, DM Lincoln, Indianola, DM North, Waukee, CBAL, Ames, Johnston, Valley

Analysis: The first of 2 West regionals features three top 10 teams from the blogs power rankings in #3 Ames, #7 Johnston and #9 Valley. The top half of the regional shouldn't provide any surprises as Ames takes care of business to reach the quarters. On the other half, Johnston and Valley most likely will play each other for a birth into the first round of state. Paeton Morrow the #1 singles player for Valley has battled an injury down the home stretch of 2018. If she is good to go, I imagine this meet being quite close.

Team State 1st Round Prediction: Ames def. Johnston

Region 2:

Teams: DM East, Ankeny Centennial, Lewis Central, DM Hoover, DM Roosevelt, Urbandale, Mason City, Fort Dodge, Dowling Catholic, Ankeny, SEP, Boone

Analysis: The 2nd West Regional contains 2 ranked squads in #4 Urbandale and #5 Dowling Catholic. I believe there shouldn't be too many surprises in this regional either. Urbandale is undefeated this season and I do not think they will add to the loss column any time soon. Dowling Catholic has provided a good season as well and I would expect them to reach the 1st round of state and take on Urbandale.


Team State 1st Round Prediction: Urbandale def. Dowling Catholic

Region 3:

Teams: Cedar Falls, Waterloo West, Linn-Mar, Davenport North, Davenport Central, IC West, Muscatine, Burlington, CR Kennedy, Western Dubuque, Waterloo East, Clinton

Analysis: Now on to the East Regionals. Region 3 features #2 IC West along with #8 Clinton. Again a pretty straight forward regional where I expect IC West to face Clinton for a trip to the final four. The Women of Troy have put on an undefeated season and #1 singles standout Emma Koch will be ready to lead IC West on a quest for a state title. Clinton has been a state presence for as many years as I can remember and could put up a fight. They were suppose to play IC West early in the season, but weather caused that meet to be cancelled. I don't think IC West should have too much trouble reaching the final four.

Team State 1st Round Prediction: IC West def. Clinton

Region 4:

Teams: Davenport West, Bettendorf, IC City, Dubuque Senior, North Scott, Pleasant Valley, Marshalltown, Ottumwa, CR Wash, CR Jeff, CR Prairie, Dubuque Hempstead

Analysis: The last regional of 2A provides us with 3 top 10 teams, #1 Pleasant Valley, #6 Dubuque Hempstead and #10 Ottumwa. I find this to be the most competitive region in 2A this year. I think there are a lot of similar ability level teams looking to play spoiler on each other. Defending state champions Pleasant Valley has a pretty routine path reaching the quarters, as they have rolled through all their opponents this year. Dubuque Hempstead has had a tremendous year and should be the team PV has to beat to go to the final four. Hempstead may hang in with PV early, but ultimately the Spartans will be too strong.

FINAL FOUR PREDICTION: PLEASANT VALLEY, IC WEST, AMES, URBANDALE



1A Girls

Region 1:

Teams; Sprit Lake/Okoboji, Spencer, Estherville LC, FDSE, Storm Lake, Cherokee, Bishop Heelan, LeMars, Harlan, DEnison-SChleswig, Audubon, Kuemper Catholic, Creston, St. Albert, Atlantic, Glenwood

Analysis: 1A Regionals will play 2 rounds on the 12th due to the fact there is more teams than 2A. Region 1 contains only one top 10 ranked team in #3 Glenwood. Glenwood has put on a dominant performance in the 2018 campaign and is expected to reach the final 4. Who will they have to beat to reach that point? I am going to go with LeMars or Spirit Lake who most likely will be competing for the chance to play Glenwood in the 1st round of state. Spirit Lake is undefeated this year and had a beatdown of LeMars earlier this season. Will be interesting to see the results.

Region 2:

Teams: Independence, Hampton-Dumont, Dike-New Hartford, Columbus Catholic, Ballard, Webster City, South Hardin, North Polk, Clarke, Oskaloosa, Chariton, Pella Christian, Red Oak, Southwest Valley, Clarinda, Shenandoah.

Analysis: Two top 10 teams, #1 Columbus Catholic and #8 Shenandoah. WHAT A REGION. There are a lot of good teams in region 2 and I think it will be exciting to see what unfolds this Saturday. #1 and defending state champs Columbus Catholic will have their work cut out for them. They will have to go through Independence, Ballard and Shenandoah (most likely) to make the final four. That is quite a tough draw but I think in the end, CC will prove to be too strong and reach the the 1st round of state. On the other half, Shenandoah has only suffered one loss this year with a 3-6 setback to Glenwood. Shenandoah looks to have a more straight forward draw than CC and I expect them to take on CC in the quarters.

Team State 1st Round Prediction: Columbus Catholic def. Shenandoah

Region 3:

Teams: Davis County, Albia, Centerville, Fairfield, Burlington ND, Mt. Pleasant, Fort Madison, Keokuk, South Tama, Pella, Grundy Center, Grinnell, Knoxville, Newton, Saydel, Norwalk

Analysis: Region 3 features FOUR top 10 teams; #5 Pella, #7 Fairfield, #9 Fort Madison and #10 Burlington ND. Lets start in the top half where Fairfield has put together a great season and is looking to keep it going. Fairfield should advance and wait for the winner of Fort Madison and Burlington ND. Burlington ND won the regular season meeting. However, Fairfield, FM and BND have all beaten each other in some sort of fashion this year. I think BND will reach the matchup with Fairfield but fall short of the team state first round. The other half? Pella should advance through will little problems. The Lady Dutch are undefeated this season and don't look to be done anytime soon.

Region 4:

Teams: Waverly-Shell Rock, Iowa Falls-Alden, Clear Lake, Aplington-Parkersburg, Decorah, Charles City, Osage, Dubuque Wahlert, Union, Marion, Oelwein, CR Xavier, Mount Vernon, Maquoketa, Camanche, Davenport Assumption

Analysis: Three top 10 teams in #2 Waverly-Shell Rock, #4 CR Xavier, #6 Dubuque Wahlert. Top half of the draw WSR has a relatively easy path to meet up with Dubuque Wahlert. Wahlert has 3 losses this year to CC, IC West and CR Xavier at the very beginning of the season. I think the Golden Eagles have improved tremendously since the first meet and will provide a very close meet with WSR. On the bottom half, CR Xavier has a good path to the 1st round of state and could await the winner of WSR and Wahlert. Should be a competitive region.
